Beechmont, Beaconsfield
- Location: Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire
- Architect: DP Architects
- Developer/Contractor: EAB Homes
- Property: Private home
- Project type: Basement extension for swimming pool and wine cellar
- Our role: structural engineering
Overview
Our team was engaged to provide structural engineering expertise for a high-spec basement extension in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire.
The project involved a ground floor extension with a basement designed to house a luxurious swimming pool and a bespoke wine cellar. Given the complexity of the extension, our focus was ensuring structural integrity of two crucial parts of the home.
Construction methodology and execution
- The basement was designed to extend approximately 3.4m below ground level which required a carefully planned underpinning strategy to the existing rear elevation. This was carried out using a ‘hit-and-miss sequence’ where the foundations are excavated in bays. This allowed for extension to the current depth of foundations while strengthening them simultaneously and avoiding slippage and movement.
- We provided a construction methodology to ensure temporary works were detailed well enough to enable the construction of the permanent works. A sacrificial trench was incorporated to act as a thrust block for the newly constructed underpins as well as an indicative propping arrangement to support temporary works, ensuring seamless integration with the permanent structure.
- The superstructure was constructed using a simple traditional build approach with engineered joists and a large bi-fold door system, seamlessly opening onto the garden space.
Outcomes
The project was successfully delivered, providing the client with a beautifully integrated basement extension featuring a swimming pool and wine cellar, all structurally sound and built to last.
