Project overview
A 5,000 sq ft barn conversion in Pirton, Hertfordshire, required structural engineering input to ensure the existing structure could be safely adapted for residential use. The project was initiated following planning approval, with our team brought in on the recommendation of the contractor.

We were responsible for the structural engineering design, ensuring the integrity of the barn’s original framework while accommodating modern building requirements.
Project requirements and design process
- Assessing the existing structure.
The first step was an initial survey to evaluate the condition and suitability of the existing barn for conversion. This assessment helped identify any structural concerns and guided the design process. - Foundation design.
A design check was carried out on the existing pad foundations to determine their adequacy for the proposed conversion. As a result, new foundations were designed to support the additional loads. - First floor structure.
The barn conversion included the introduction of a new first floor. We designed an intermediate structure to support a beam and block floor system. This included detailing all necessary bearings and connections. - Roof structure assessment.
As part of the conversion, modifications to the roof were required. A structural check was performed to confirm the existing framework could support the additional loads, ensuring compliance with safety and performance standards.
