Structural engineers design buildings and structures to ensure they are safe and stable, using precise design and analysis. We calculate how structures respond to forces like gravity, wind and daily use, working with materials from concrete to timber to create optimal solutions.
At dbstructural, we go beyond basic structural integrity. Our designs blend technical excellence with architectural vision, delivering efficient solutions that respect both engineering demands and creative intent.
Architects will produce drawings for the plan layouts, sections, elevations along with specifications for wall, floor and roof build ups with an emphasis on achieving required u-values (thermal efficiency values). Engineers will take the Architects plans and produce a specification for all the structural requirements to ensure the proposed building can sufficiently transfer all loads to the ground without compromising Architectural features.
While structural engineers tend to come on board when architectural plans are ready to go, the earlier you can get them involved, the better.
At dbstructural we recommend early engagement so we can optimise structural solutions and get ahead of potential challenges. This way we can navigate all the surveys, reports and investigations that can cost way too much time and money if you miss them at the start.
The production of the drawings themselves are all subject to the specific project and its complexities whilst also factoring in a lead-in time to resource a project. The deliverables on a project can be advised on a case by case basis and we are always conscious to agree realistic deadlines and meet them.

Traditionally, structural engineers join a project at stage 4, but we’re big fans of getting involved earlier. It just has so many benefits:
Stages 0-1 (Strategic definition): here, the structural engineers can assess project viability and provide technical guidance.
Stage 2 (Concept design): this is where structural engineers can spot cost savings and prevent structural surprises post-planning.
Stage 3 (Spatial coordination): getting the structural engineers to advise and collaborate on the design is helpful for understanding structural options and solutions. They can produce the initial structural framing design and civils schematics.
Stage 4 (Technical design): working on the final technical drawings with the architects and other consultants, the structural engineer can refine and perfect the details.
Stage 5 (Site works): whilst on site, we’re on hand to answer queries from the contractor as and when they arise.
The cost of a Structural Engineer will vary based on the project and the complexities involved. We’re always upfront from the outset and our proposals are fully inclusive. We won’t be the cheapest, we won’t be the dearest, but we are confident in giving you the best service.
Always get input from a structural engineer before removing a wall. Even if it seems non-structural, it could be load-bearing.
